Angkatan Pelukis Kedah, better known as APK, was established as a registered organization on 25 JANUARY 1977. At that time, Cikgu Jamaluddin Abdullah led APK as the first Yang DiPertua APK. APK's activities at the beginning of its establishment were based at the Multipurpose Complex, Jalan Stadium, Alor Star where the majority of its membership consisted of art education teachers from the Ministry of Education Malaysia who work in Kota Setar. The First APK Exhibition was held in 1978 at the Multipurpose Center Complex, Alor Star in collaboration with the Kedah State Department of Youth Culture & Sports. The Kedah State Art Gallery has secured the inauguration of DYMM TUANKU SULTAN NEGERI KEDAH DARUL AMAN on 25 JULY 1983. The state government has recognized the struggle of APK until the establishment of the Kedah State Art Gallery by providing an APK office at the Kedah State Art Gallery and making the Board Kedah State Museum as the patron of APK. Under the leadership of Dato 'Paduka Ahmad Basri bin Mohd Akil for 26 years, APK has successfully held 20 large-scale art exhibitions and the last time was held on 14 July 2003 to 21 July 2003 at the Alor Star Great Hall. The exhibition entitled BERUSLENSA ’03 had to be held at the Balai Besar because the Kedah State Art Gallery is closed until now for conservation work. To date, APK has helped the state government create a collection of more than 200 works worth millions of ringgit, including the works of the country's great artists such as Dato 'Ibrahim Hussein, AB Ibrahim, Hoessein Enas, Amron Omar, Sharifah Fatimah Syed Zubir, and others. . There are also great works from abroad such as the paintings of Prof. Billy Morrow Jackson, artist USA.
