Description
Description and Work Details: This mural work was produced in conjunction with the program for #tanahairku 3.0 “Street Art Campaign” by Petronas. In 2015. It is a cross between the Bornean clouded leopard (the largest feline in Sarawak) and the domestic cat. The Bornean clouded leopard has its place in the Dayak culture as a creature of high value, hence the fact that its fur adorns many a Dayak war coat. It is therefore very much connected with the Dayak culture and its natural habitat “the ancient Borneo rainforest”. In other words, the clouded leopard represents our roots. The domestic cat on the other hand, is a common creature in the modern household. It is not connected with the forest, but with ‘modernity’, relatively speaking. The domestic cat is also the mascot of the city of Kuching, the name of which very much sounds like the Malay word for ‘cat’. The leaping feline is supposed to symbolize us moving ahead into a progressive future, but in order to leap it needs the help of its powerful hind legs. We decided to integrate the hind legs of the clouded leopard, to show that no matter how modern/urban we are (symbolized by the domestic cat), we are still very much shaped by our identity, which in turn is shaped by our roots ( symbolized by the hind legs of the clouded leopard). To move forward, we need to remember and preserve our past; our identity… because without the past there will be no present, and no future.

Kota Kinabalu in Sabah has always been on my list of places to travel to. So, when the opportunity to visit the city during a work trip came along, I was more than happy to volunteer.

December 16, 2014 @ 8:18am By Diana Yeoh

IPOH: PERAK has unveiled the “Ipoh Mural Art” trail map which showcases the artworks in seven locations in the city here. This two hour-long trail will cover places from Jalan Tun Sambanthan to Jalan Bandar Timah-Jalan Panglima-Jalan Bijeh Timah-Jalan Market and Jalan Sultan Iskandar, before ending at Jalan Masjid. Most of the mural arts are drawn by local artists Eric Lai, Bryan Tan, Chris Chow and Mohd Najib Zainudin. Even the famed Ernest Zacharevic from Lithuania had contributed his efforts in creating a mural piece for Ipoh.
